Open Hexagonal Lattice I

Acrylic on canvas
30" h x 40" w

1996

This work explores Escher-style impossible shapes, executed in bright rainbow colors. The design was planned as a small sketch, and then transferred to canvas and painted in acrylic.

The colors are arranged so that any three sides of a "cube" contain three successive colors in the rainbow, such as red-orange-yellow, or yellow-green-blue. The intersections where six diamonds meet have all six colors in rainbow order, clockwise.  In addition to the six basic colors used in previous works, this piece incorporates black in the triangular regions to exaggerate the sense of depth.
